ARINC 825 Compliant CAN Transceiver for Avionics Applications

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Mission Viejo, CA (February 17, 2011) – Holt Integrated Circuits, a world leader in data bus IC’s for the avionics and military industries, today introduced HI-3000, an ARINC 825 / ISO 11898-5 compliant CAN transceiver, designed specifically for the avionics market. The rugged design is short circuit protected to +/- 58V on the bus lines and is capable of operating in the temperature range -55oC to +125oC.

Controller Area Network (CAN) devices have become a popular data bus solution in the avionics industry, most notably since the release of the ARINC 825 specification in November 2007, which standardized the use of CAN in avionics applications. Holt has leveraged its expertise in providing mixed signal ARINC 429 and MIL-STD-1553 solutions and produced an ARINC 825 compliant CAN transceiver to compliment its recently announced HI-3110 CAN controller family.

“The HI-3000 family leverages Holt’s decades-long experience in the avionics industry, producing a rugged transceiver specifically targeted at avionics embedded CAN applications” said Anthony Murray, Director of Business Development at Holt.

The HI-3000 supports two modes of operation: Normal Mode and Standby Mode. The Standby Mode is a very low-current mode which continues to monitor bus activity, allowing the external controller to manage wake-up. Superior common-mode receiver performance makes the device especially suitable for applications where ground reference voltages may vary from point to point over long distances along the CAN bus. In addition, the HI-3000 provides a SPLIT pin to give an output reference voltage of VDD/2 which can be used for stabilizing the recessive bus level when the split termination technique is used to terminate the bus.

The device also features a TXD dominant time-out feature to protect the bus from being driven into a permanent dominant state if the TXD pin becomes permanently low due to application failure. This feature is mandated as part of the ARINC 825 specification.

The HI-3001 is identical to the HI-3000 except the SPLIT pin is substituted with a VIO supply voltage pin. This allows the HI-3001 to interface digital I/O directly with 3.3V controllers. Both the HI-3000 and HI-3001 are offered in an 8-pin SOIC package. The HI-3002 provides both the SPLIT and VIO supply voltage pins in a compact 16-pin QFN package.

Samples of HI-3000 are available immediately.
