World's Smallest MIL-STD-1553 Remote Terminal Solution

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Mission Viejo, CA (September 14, 2009) – Holt Integrated Circuits, a world leader in data bus IC’s for the avionics and military industries, expanded its portfolio of MIL-STD-1553 products by announcing the release of HI-6120 and HI-6121, the world’s smallest Remote Terminal solutions.  These devices provide a single-chip, 3.3V MIL-STD-1553 Remote Terminal solution, including dual transceivers, in compact surface-mount plastic packages.

The HI-6120 uses a 16-bit parallel host bus interface in a 100-pin PQFP package.  The HI-6121 uses a 4-wire Serial Peripheral host Interface (SPI) and comes in a 52-pin PQFP or 64-pin QFN.  The 64-pin QFN is the world’s smallest remote terminal solution, at only 9mm x 9mm x 1mm.  Both devices handle all aspects of the MIL-STD-1553 protocol, including message encoding, decoding, error detection, illegal command detection and data buffering. Host data management is simplified by storing message information and data within the on-chip 32K x 16-bit static RAM.

“Holts unique single-chip approach offers customers a less expensive, more reliable and compact solution with faster lead-times than existing multi-chip module solutions on the market today,” said Anthony Murray, Director of Business Development at Holt.  “The devices can operate with minimum host intervention, offering the user maximum flexibility with a multitude of programmable features”.

Key features include fully programmable memory management with up to four data buffering modes, internal illegalization capability for subaddress, command T/R bit, broadcast vs non-broadcast and word count or mode code (4096 combinations), simplified mode command handling, programmable interrupts with 16-interrupt log buffer, optional illegal command detection and optional broadcast command recognition.

The HI-6120 and HI-6121 can also be configured for automatic self-initialization, further minimizing external host interaction.  A dedicated SPI port reads data from an external serial EEPROM memory to fully configure the internal RAM, illegalization table and host interrupts.

The devices are offered with industrial -40oC to + 85oC, or extended, -55oC to + 125oC temperature ranges.  Optional burn-in is available on the extended temperature range.  “RoHS compliant” lead-free options are also offered.  Datasheet, samples and evaluation kits for both devices, along with supporting software, are currently available on request.
