World’s Only MIL-STD-1553 DO-254 Certifiable IP Core

Friday, February 26, 2021
Mission Viejo, CA (Februar 26, 2020) – Holt Integrated Circuits today announced the release of the World’s first MIL-STD-1553 DO-254 certifiable IP Core for military and commercial avionics applications. The HI-6300 is a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) 1553 IP Core available with a complete DO-254 certification data package.  The package includes the IP Core, delivered as encrypted source code, as well as the data, test bench, and design artifacts necessary to demonstrate that the IP Core has been developed in accordance with the guidelines necessary to meet the DO-254 DAL A design assurance objectives and compliant with the guidance from CAST 33 and AC20-152A.

The RTCA DO-254/EUROCAE ED-80 (DO-254) standard provides guidance and recommendations for the activities that should be performed in order to meet the design assurance objectives of complex electronic hardware (CEH) used in avionics systems.  Design Assurance Level A (DAL A) is the highest and most stringent level of certification, in which a failure is classified as resulting in a catastrophic failure for the aircraft.

The HI-6300 IP Core and data package have been independently audited and successfully passed all Stage of Involvement (SOI) audits (1 through 4) with Tammy Reeve of Patmos Engineering, an FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER). The IP Core design artifacts were reviewed and found to be compliant for use in avionics systems requiring any Design Assurance Level, from DAL A (most safety critical) to DAL E (a failure condition has no effect on the operational capability of the aircraft).

“Independent review and approval of our MIL-STD-1553 IP core and design artifacts for use in complex avionics systems provides our customers with assurance that our product meets all DAL A design assurance objectives of the DO-254 standard and gives them the confidence that the artifacts provided will meet the requirements for certification of their own systems,” said David Mead, President and CEO of Holt.

“This effort represents a certifiable building block for any customer needing to incorporate the 1553 protocol into their programmable hardware for use in avionics applications requiring AC20-152A DO-254 compliance,” said Tammy Reeve, FAA DER and President of Patmos Engineering Services.

The IP core is based on Holt’s independently-validated monolithic protocol ICs for MIL-STD-1553, namely Holt’s HI-6130 and MAMBATM families, and is fully software compatible with them.

The core supports Bus Controller (BC), Monitor Terminal (MT) and Remote Terminal (RT) functions, with all options having a high-performance synchronous host interface allowing easy connection to AMBA AXI4 interface protocol or PCI-Express. Enabled terminals communicate with the MIL-STD-1553 buses through a shared dual bus transceiver, HI-1587, and external isolation transformer, also available from Holt. The HI-1587 is the world’s first MIL-STD-1553 transceiver featuring 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V compatible digital I/O and includes an integrated IP security module eliminating the need for a separate dongle chip to unlock the IP.
