Guidelines for Lightning Protection according to RTCA DO-160G Level 4

Friday, September 9, 2011

Mission Viejo, CA (September 8, 2011)Holt Integrated Circuits, a world leader in data bus IC’s for commercial and military avionics, today published a new application note (AN-301) which provides guidelines for protection against lightning induced transients applied to Holt’s latest generation of ARINC 429 line drivers and receivers. The circuits recommended in AN-301 were all tested according to RTCA/DO-160G, Section 22, Level 4 Pin Injection Test Waveform Set A (3 & 4), Set B (3 & 5A) and Set Z (3 & 5B).

The recent move from aluminum to newer composite air frames has made lightning susceptibility a major issue in aircraft design and reliability. Most lightning susceptible components now need to meet RTCA/DO-160G, Section 22, Level 4 waveforms, which generate far higher voltages than the previous Level 3 waveforms. AN-301 provides the user with the necessary guidelines to enable compliance of Holt products with RTCA/DO-160G, Level 4 waveforms. AN-300 is also available to enable compliance to RTCA/DO-160G, Level 3 waveforms. Both app notes are available upon request from Holt.

“Holt is firmly committed to providing customers with the best guidelines and recommendations to ensure our products meet or exceed the latest standards and regulations”, said Anthony Murray, Director of Business Development at Holt. “All of Holt’s latest ARINC 429 products have been designed and tested for DO-160G Level 4 waveform compliance”.

Holt’s latest products complying with DO-160G Level 4 include HI-8596, a 3.3V single supply ARINC 429 line driver, HI-3593, a single chip ARINC 429 protocol IC with integrated line driver and two line receivers and HI-3717, the first single chip ARINC 717 solution on the market.
