New Holt ARINC 429 Line Driver Requires Only 5V Supplies

Tuesday, May 9, 2006

Mission Viejo, CA (May 9, 2006) – Holt Integrated Circuits announced the release of the new HI-8570 ARINC 429 Line Driver IC, which requires only 5V power supplies. The HI-8570 has the same functionality and small footprint as Holt’s industry-standard HI-8585 ARINC 429 Line Driver, but operates from a +5V and –5V supply line. The new part was developed in response to customer demand for a line driver that did not require the usual +/-12V or +/- 15V supplies that are often only included in applications to accommodate the old style line drivers.

Because of its low power consumption, the HI-8570 negative supply may be provided by a separate, low-cost, small footprint DC/DC converter IC, such as the Maxim MAX1673. A single MAX1673 may be used to power the negative rail of two HI-8570 line drivers. This way, the board’s 5V logic supply is the only power necessary to drive the ARINC 429 Line Drivers.

Packaged in an 8-pin thermally enhanced plastic SOIC, the HI-8570 consumes only 170mW when transmitting into a full ARINC 429 load. A digital input pin switches the part’s output characteristics between ARINC 429 High-Speed and Low-Speed transmission modes. The HI-8570 is logically identical with the HI-8585 allowing it to be used with existing ARINC 429 protocol devices such as the Holt HI-8584 or custom designs. The HI-8570’s digital inputs are compatible with 3.3V or 5V logic.
